One year after the fall: Busisiwe Mkhwebane's journey from impeachment to EFF parliamentarian
As the first head of a chapter 9 institution to be impeached, her removal marked a historic moment in the country's political landscape.voted 318 to 43 to remove her while she was already suspended, just weeks before her seven-year term was set to expire in mid-October.
She argues that her removal was unjust and is seeking compensation as reparations for what she claims were violations of her rights. She noted that even public servants are entitled to their pension and gratuity upon leaving their employment. “I then asked my legal team to write a letter of demand with a due date of 18 December 2023. I received no response. I informed the CEO that interest would be charged on the amount and that she and the Public Protector, Gcaleka, would be held personally liable,” said Mkhwebane.“I told the Public Protector that if this matter wasn’t resolved, I would have no option but to go to court for violation of my rights. I also indicated that this was unnecessary as the matter could be resolved amicably.
This move marked her determination to remain relevant in South African politics, transitioning from her role as Public Protector to a key player in the political arena. Mkhwebane’s time as Public Protector was also marked by several contentious investigations, most notably her report on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Bosasa campaign donation.
