One person was killed and two others were injured, one seriously, when two cars collided on Basil February Road in Merebank in Durban at about 10.30am on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

Rescue Care paramedics arrived on the scene to find the two badly damaged cars in the road, Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said.

One of the drivers, a man believed to be in his 20s, had sustained major injuries and unfortunately there was nothing more paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene. Two other people had sustained injuries, one minor and another serious. The seriously injured man, also in his 20s, was stabilised on the scene by advanced life support paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital for the further care that he required. The cause of the accident was not known, Jamieson said.
