These pictures show the birth of the massively popular Mathew Street Festival 30 years ago
It would go on for 20 years, showcasing some of the best tribute bands as well as larger acts like The Proclaimers, Pete Best and the Lightning Seeds.
But as it got bigger, so did the criticisms. Families complained they were unable to take their children into the city during the festival due to the excess drinking and vomiting on the streets. One business lobbying group called it a"glorified p***-up that does not showcase the best of the city." In 2007 it was cancelled on health and safety grounds. Though it returned after a campaign by the ECHO and its supporters.
However six years later Mathew Street Festival was canned for good, having outgrown its own format with its massive popularity. It was replaced by the Liverpool International Music Festival held in Sefton Park. These photographs unearthed from the Mirrorpix archived show that first weekend that would set the tone for what the Mathew Street Festival could be as Liverpool was turned into one massive party.
