One Daredevil & Kingpin Detail Will Prove Whether The Show Is MCU Canon...
One detail will prove whether the MCU's Daredevil series is a reboot, or whether it continues the story of Matt Murdock and the Kingpin from the classic Marvel Netflix shows. For years the relationship between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television seemed to be a strained one, with the movies refusing to acknowledge the shows at all. All that has begun to change, however, with the return of Marvel Netflix stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D'onofrio in Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
It's currently unclear whether these are the same versions of the characters seen in the Marvel Netflix Daredevil show, or whether Marvel has done a soft reboot - hand-waving it away with the explanation they're variants from different branched timelines. The actors themselves have appeared divided on the issue, and Marvel don't seem to be in much of a hurry to clear up the ambiguity.
It's entirely possible the matter will be raised ahead of the Disney+ Daredevil show, perhaps in Marvel's upcoming Echo series, which stars Alaqua Cox as a vigilante already established to have close ties to the Kingpin. There have been rumors both Kingpin and Daredevil are set to return in Echo, and costume designer Stacy Caballero unwittingly supported these when she updated her resume after working on the show.
Whether it takes place in Echo or in Daredevil's own Disney+ TV show, a Kingpin and Daredevil encounter in Echo is the best bet to finally settle the questions of canonicity once and for all. Unfortunately, in either case the answers probably won't be given until 2023; production on Echo only began in May 2022, and Daredevil is in the earliest stages of pre-production. It's likely audiences will have to wait until then to resolve the MCU canonicity of Daredevil and Kingpin.
