MLB: Cole Irvin had 11 strikeouts through seven innings as the Oakland A’s beat the Miami Marlins at the Coliseum
OAKLAND — Cole Irvin said he received a couple of text messages from former teammates Wednesday afternoon after his masterful performance against the Miami Marlins.
“I’m just glad to get over the double-digit hump,” said Irvin, whose previous career high for strikeouts in a game was nine, set in May 2021 against Toronto. “That one’s been something that I’ve been thinking about for a little longer. I’m just glad to be able to get through it.The A’s lost a 2-0 lead after Irvin exited the game, as the Marlins scored a run in both the eighth and ninth innings.
“ is one of my best friends,” Irvin said. “So hopefully, this leads into a good series for us against the Yankees.” “I think we all just need to take a small step forward. We don’t need to over overdo things,” said Irvin, in his second full season in Oakland. “We don’t need to try to be someone else. We just need to keep doing our job and do it well enough that other guys can learn from it.
Wednesday, though, Irvin allowed singles in the third and fourth innings but retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced. He relied heavily on a mid-90s four-seam fastball, as he had four strikeouts through three innings and seven through five innings. The A’s were held without a hit through five innings by former Oakland starter Luzardo before Chad Pinder came through with a bases-loaded single to right in the sixth to give his team a 2-0 lead.
