In country like this, it\u0027s more about the fishing than the catching. And in that sense, the fishing was great.

Mayflies, midges, craneflies, caddis, all manner of insects. And under them as they skittered and danced on the water’s surface, trout. I watched them rise and splash and lunge at the bugs as they touched briefly on the meniscus to lay their eggs while I stood with my fly rod ready to make a cast.

Rocks turned golden by light tinged by the tannins in Jumpingpound Creek west of Calgary, Ab., on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.I hadn’t intended to just yank it from the water but it cartwheeled through the air as I lifted the rod tip, slipped off the barbless hook and landed in a new postal zone further downstream. OK, there are fish here. I dried off the fly and made another cast.

I rolled up and out of the Jumpingpound valley and down into the cleft at Canyon Creek. The fishing is a little tough on the wide gravel flat that fills the valley but the meadows on either side of it are pretty enough that the fishing doesn’t really matter. I stopped at the first one for some pictures.Article content

But I was getting closer now to the Elbow River valley and more traffic. There were cars at every trailhead and I even passed a vehicle parked on the road in the shade of a tree with people sitting on lawn chairs right on the gravel. I turned around. Spotted coralroot orchids on the edge of a patch of forest west of Calgary, Ab., on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.Paintbrush was everywhere, some of it a pale yellow, some orange but most a bright, screaming red. Backlit by the sun and against the dark forest background, they looked like they were on fire.

There were orchids along the far bank and I watched what I think was a moth fly in among the shoreline rocks and spread its wings to blend in. Moss, more blue than green in the shaded valley, lined the banks and small orchids swayed in the breeze along water.
