When it comes to organised crime, South Africa is going to have to take the 80/20 principle - a targeted, strategic approach which focuses on the crimes that commit the most harm to our democracy, said Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Anton du Plessis. "We will not be able to prosecute our way out of this problem – there are three-and-a-half million crimes reported every single year to the police," Du Plessis said during News24's On The Record summit in Cape Town on Thursday.
"We need to focus on particular forms of gangs, we need to focus on extortion rackets. And we also need to focus not just on the runner – we need to focus on the high-level kingpins. The good news is the crisis we're in didn't happen by slow attrition. It happened by design; it was a man-made crisis.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
