Residents say noise from cars scraping the 'traffic calming' device keeps them awake, while accidents from speeding persist.
Tina Cyran of Newark says a speed hump near her home on South 11th Street has failed to prevent speeding, kept her up at night and contributed to accidents on the block. When Tina Cyran bought her Newark house in 2016, the lone speed hump in the middle of her block on South 11th Street was not a concern.that speed humps, as opposed to narrower speed bumps, can slow traffic and improve safety by giving drivers a noticeable jolt reminding them of the possible presence of pedestrians.
The same thing happened again this past summer when a Jeep SUV that went over the hump smashed into her 2022 Honda HR-V then went up in flames. “I heard the errrrrrrr before he hit the speed hump,” said Cyran, imitating the sound of screeching brakes. “Whether or not there was another car. And you can see where he hit the first car. It was right after the speed hump.”
“I’ve made multiple calls, I’ve begged and I’ve pleaded,” said Cyran, who spent eight years in the Army Reserve. “I’ve played the property taxpayer card, I’ve played the veteran’s card. All they do is take my name.” “There is a procedure to be followed in order to install traffic humps,” Garofalo said. “This is usually started by the community via petition.”
The gouges in this speed hump on South 11th Street in Newark are evidence of the repeated noisy scrapes by car undercarriages that residents say have kept them awake at night.“The cars roll straight through, to be honest,” said Troy Leake, 47, a truck driver who lives a few doors down from Cryan. “In the evening, you get all the performance cars, race cars, all the stolen cars, everything comes through here. You can use other blocks, but they’ve got a lot of lights and stuff.
