On Instagram, high views get high quality video

The more popular the content, the better it'll look on Instagram, according to its head, Adam Mosseri.

The head says that resources will be allocated to content that is popular so that the quality of videos is higher.At the weekend, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri participated in an AMA and during that session he helped shed insight on how the Insta sausage is made.. Folks who have built up a repository of content may notice that as they go further back in their timeline, the quality of video drops off of a cliff. This isn’t a bug, it’s actually a feature.

This revelation has not been handled well by users. Many have argued that all users should be treated fairly and receive the same resources but we disagree. At the end of the day, Instagram needs to make money and it does that by driving engagement so users remain on the platform for longer. We’d argue that assigning resources based on which creators are bringing users to Instagram and keeping them there should be the priority.

Mosseri added that this system has the benefit of allowing a person on a slow data connection to load a video even if its at low quality. This, he says, is better than having them stare at a loading circle. At the end of the day though, Mosseri says that viewers are more concerned the content than the quality.
