Terry Pluto: 'It seems most sports families in Northeast Ohio are football families. Mine was a baseball family. My father talked about the players from his youth as if they were relatives.'

CLEVELAND, Ohio – With Father’s Day approaching, I began thinking about Tom Pluto.I began thinking about my father taking me to Tribe games at the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. During some of those trips, my father talked about his ballpark ...League Park has come back from the dead at its old location on East 66th and Lexington Avenue.

As I walked around League Park, these stories came back to me. I could hear my father’s voice rising. He wanted me to know what it was like to be a kid in the claws of the Depression, taking joy in the 1930s Tribe – much like I did with the teams of the 1960s. At League Park, the right field screen was – and still is – only 290 feet from home plate. Photo By Terry Pluto / Cleveland.comNot the one at Boston’s Fenway Park, but at League Park. There was a right field wall only 290 feet from home plate. It was 20 feet tall with another 25-foot screen on top to protect the traffic on Lexington Avenue. There were holes in the wall, where kids would watch the games for free.

As I walked around the park, there was an amateur game taking place between the Cleveland Buckeyes and the Bay Village Rockets. I watched a few innings. That’s when I remembered playing a game on this same field.
