Five men have been arrested over the shooting of the senior PSNI officer in Omagh

Detectives have been granted more time to question four of the men arrested in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh on Wednesday.

The PSNI say all five of the arrested men remain in custody in the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station.Police have said dissident republican group the New IRA is their primary line of inquiry. DCI John Caldwell remains critically ill after the attack in Omagh on Wednesday night. On Saturday morning, Beragh Swifts, the football club where Mr Caldwell is a volunteer coach, led a solidarity walk through the village of Beragh on the outskirts of Omagh.

Hundreds of people also gathered for a rally in Omagh this morning, organised by trade unions, to demand an end to paramilitary violence in Northern Ireland.
