In the then-demonstration sport of curling, Canada’s Linda Moore rink won the gold medal in the women’s event. Calgary’s Ed Lukowich rink won bronze on the men’s side. Canada’s Gaetan Boucher — a four-time Olympic medallist from previous Games — skated his last Olympic speedskating race, placing ninth.

Some spectators had used the flame in one of the Olympic site’s smaller cauldrons to roast hot dogs.
