Breaking down a critical matchup for the Ohio State vs. Penn State game on Saturday.
’s Stephen Means break down the matchup of Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu vs. Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau:Penn State’s left tackle has ideal size , light feet and Lions head coach James Franklin has consistently praised the fourth-year lineman for his play strength and his ability to recover if beaten initially at the snap.
Knowing Fashanu has his back, Allar can see where the pressure is coming from and either check the ball down to a tight end or running back in the flat or move in the pocket to buy time for a receiver to come open across the middle.Penn State sophomore quarterback Drew Allar has not thrown an interception in 181 passing attempts this season and the Lions have allowed just four sacks in six games. The play of Fashanu is a major reason why.
It’s also worth noting Tuimoloau created havoc in Ohio State’s 44-31 win over Penn State at Beaver Stadium last year while aligned at left defensive end. PSU right tackle Bryce Effner could not handle Tuimoloau. But all three of his sacks have come in the last two games, as have half of his pressures. The former five-star recruit is starting to turn into the player most thought he’d be as a recruit, which is why OSU was willing to go into overtime waiting on his commitment back in 2021.It’s probably fair to say that Tuimoloau doesn’t fall under the category of being a “Sack Guy.” However, that might begin to change if he keeps up his production of the past two games.
