Olivier Saillard, a consultant to Pitti Uomo, has taken on the task of chronicling 30 years of menswear history to celebrate the three decades since the menswear festival invited Vivienne Westwood to be its first guest designer in 1990.
A Short Novel on Men’s Fashion, Thirty Years at Pitti Immagine Uomo
As for Wilde’s ever-present quote, it’s hard to argue against it amidst the dapper gents of Pitti Uomo. Since its inception in 1972 as a trade fair, the biannual festival has become ground zero for menswear, where obsessives flock and obsessions are born.
The exhibition memorializes all of the important moments at Pitti Uomo, not chronologically, but through fashion “families,” as Saillard calls them. Color, silhouette, and spirit define the galleries, with designers donating pieces from their shows at Pitti Uomo or pieces special to them.
