Musician Oliver Anthony shared his reaction to his song getting airtime during the Republican presidential debate.
The debate, hosted by the Republican National Committee and Fox News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened with Anthony's"Rich Men North of Richmond" chorus. The first question solicited speculation from the candidates on why the song became such a hit among the public.
On the day of the debate, the song was reportedly making $40,000 every day. Three of Anthony's songs were the top three on iTunes. "The one thing that has bothered me is seeing people wrap politics up into this," Anthony said."I'm disappointed to see — like it's aggravating seeing people on conservative news try to identify with me like I'm one of them. It's aggravating seeing certain musicians and politicians act like we're buddies and act like we're fighting the same struggle here like that we're trying to present the same message.
Anthony reiterated that his music isn't meant to be political and addressed the Left, which he said has criticized him by claiming the song attacks the poor. He pointed to another one of his songs,"Doggon It," to prove his point."All of my songs that reference class defend the poor," he said.Anthony has more than 4.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, an increase from the 40,000 he had before releasing his latest song.
His Instagram account has gained followers since the release of his song. He now has over 1 million followers and previously had fewer than 10,000.
