The Ohio Supreme Court struck a blow Wednesday against a law that allows the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to extend prison sentences of inmates without asking the courts.

The court’s decisions on the cases stem back to a 2017 murder and subsequent law passed by the legislature that attempted to prevent similar crimes. In late 2018, the Ohio General Assembly passed a law that allows the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to extend incarceration time beyond an offender’s minimum prison term or early-release date but not beyond the maximum prison term.
