The Ohio Supreme Court ordered the Ohio Redistricting Commission to appear before the bench at 10 a.m. Tuesday to discuss whether it should be held in contempt for failing to produce constitutional state legislative maps.
issued Thursday morning, signed by Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, says that justices will review the arguments from members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission, which the members submitted Wednesday, about why they are not in contempt.briefs explaining why they shouldn’t be held in contempt of court after the commission blew past a court-ordered deadline to create constitutional state legislative maps. In two previous instances, justices rejected previous maps as illegal gerrymanders.
The Democrats argued in their briefs that they worked in good faith and had produced maps after Feb. 7, the most recent time the Supreme Court tossed out state legislative maps. DeWine, Faber and LaRose argued they lacked the mapmaking software and expertise since the Republican legislative leaders on the commission controlled the budgets and mapmaking staff.
The Thursday order says that the court will not grant any delays in the hearing, meaning that attorneys for the redistricting commission cannot try to postpone the event.
