The group grows to 12 teams beginning next season.The national semifinals are Jan. 1 at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, with the title game set for Jan. 8 in Houston.

The No. 1 ranking became the first for Ohio State since 2019 and the fourth in the 10 playoff seasons, ranking the Buckeyes behind Alabama , Georgia and Clemson . Florida State appeared in the top four for the first time since 2014, the first year of the playoff, when the Seminoles made it at No. 3 and lost a semifinal to Oregon. Georgia appeared in the top four for the 13th consecutive ranking.

No. 8 Alabama , No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 10 Mississippi round out the top 10. Two Group of Five teams made the rankings as they vie for that division’s berth in the major bowls: No. 24 Tulane and No. 25 Air Force .
