Ohio State football coach Ryan Day set out to find Kyle McCord's 'extraordinary trait' at the start of the quarterback competition.
After Ohio State’s third spring practice, Day articulated what he looked for in the next quarterback entrusted with full control of his offense. The first factor was a highly competitive nature — something he said both McCord and Devin Brown exemplified throughout their battle dating back to last January.“You think about the different quarterbacks we’ve had, just going back to Braxton and Cardale , J.T. , Dwayne , Justin , CJ. , Joe — they all had extraordinary traits.
Does consistency truly qualify as exceptional? That’s already the norm at Ohio State. You can draw a line starting with J.T. Barrett through Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud of quarterbacks under Day who take care of the ball and thrive on efficiency. • Fields’ big moment also came at Michigan, when a knee injury forced him to the medical tent. He strapped on a brace, returned on the same drive, and on the first snap rolled out left and threw a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson.
They caught a glimpse of it on the field last Saturday. McCord lost a fumble when sacked on the Buckeyes’ second series against Western Kentucky. He responded by leading five straight second-quarter touchdown drives. Day even decided against taking a knee so he could watch McCord lead a two-minute drill going into halftime.Those qualities showed up in other ways over the past three years.
