Ohio State football offensive lineman Carson Hinzman learned worth ethic on the farm, with a grandmother who he calls the toughest person he's ever known.
“That’d be our death,” Tera Hinzman, Carson’s mother and Sandra’s daughter-in-law, said. “That would kill her and we’d be dead in the process.”
Sandra grew up on a farm three miles away. Her grandfather bought her a pair of bib overalls when she was about 6 years old. She wanted to work with the boys, and for most of her life, she did. Unwittingly, farm work helped build his football drive. While his teammates dreaded those preseason workouts, Hinzman looked forward to them. They provided a break from the chores waiting for him back home.
“That’s when Carson stepped up to be a leader and started working hard and doing things that were extraordinary,” Tera said. “That’s when I saw him stepping out of the box and doing things other kids didn’t want to do.”Hinzman said his grandfather, Don, shared Sandra’s perseverance and determination. He was as “bull-headed” as all the men on that side of the family, yet also “super compassionate.”
“So you’ve gotta be able to multitask. He’s growing with it. He’s building. It’s not an easy job. But the goal is that he’s going to be playing his best football here down the stretch.”
