The Ohio Surpeme Court has ruled the state legistlative maps in question to be unconstitutional.

The election is to be conducted using a set of maps ruled unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court, as illegally gerrymandered to favor Republicans. A three-judge federal panel, in a 2-1 decision Friday, ordered the maps be used, though an appeal is possible.

Despite the adaption of the unconstitutional set of maps only being a “temporary solution,” the primary results will still have a permanent effect on the 2022 midterm elections, and the eventual winners will hold office for at least two years. The maps are expected to give Republicans and Democrats an advantage in 54% and 46% of Ohio’s state legislative seats, respectively. Those percentages correspond with how much support each party’s statewide candidates received, on average, during the past decade - a test included in the constitutional amendment that reformed the map-drawing process.
