Hospitalizations were up Monday afternoon to 5,011 from 4,782 - a net increase that reflects new coronavirus admissions and discharges.

Amid the latest surge of COVID-19 cases, health care workers yet again are having to make difficult triage decisions in caring for patients. COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Health reported 8,092 new coronavirus cases Monday afternoon, and 5,011 people in hospitals who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The cases didn’t necessarily all occur on Monday. The Department of Health learns of cases through laboratory reports of positive results, as well as from doctors who report cases. Those reports may have been delayed over the holidays. Nevertheless, the state continues to be in a coronavirus surge, with the delta and omicron variants behind the spread.

On Sunday, there were 20,917 cases, an all-time high. But the Sunday report included Christmas Day cases, which were not reported on Saturday.And 28,720 people in Ohio have died with COVID-19, a number just under the
