Biden administration officials have been investigating concerns that the Chinese telecoms company Huawei may be gathering sensitive information on military locations.
The officials are looking into whether Huawei's cell towers have been gathering sensitive information from missile silos or military bases and sending it to China, according to Reuters.Officials are particularly concerned about Huawei recording data regarding military drills or the readiness status of certain facilities, according to one source.
This investigation was opened by the Commerce Department shortly after President Joe Biden came into office and occurred after a May 2019 executive order empowered the department to investigate the Chinese company. Huawei was subpoenaed by the agency in April 2021 to learn about its policies regarding sharing data with foreign entities.
The Commerce Department declined to confirm or deny its investigation. It stated that"protecting U.S. persons' safety and security against malign information collection is vital to protecting our economy and national security."Huawei has been the target of scrutiny from federal regulators for years and has regularly denied allegations that it shares data with the Chinese Communist Party.
