Houston Astros starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi throws to a Seattle Mariners batter during the first inning of a baseball game Friday, April 15, 2022, in Seattle. SEATTLE — At some point, perhaps when Dusty Baker deems these regular-season games are no longer “still in spring training,” the actual Astros offense will appear. Friday’s lifeless 11-1 loss brought the club no closer to that reality, but did crystalize one clear truth: pitching cannot carry this team forever.

The lineup totaled five hits and saw two of its stars fall further into season-opening slumps. Jose Altuve and Kyle Tucker teamed to finish 0-for-8 and are now 6-for-51 to start the season. Houston has managed five runs in its past 28 innings. It has scored 25 total across seven games — the same amount their pitching staff has surrendered.Starter Jake Odorizzi delivered a dud, leaving the dregs of Houston’s bullpen to absorb a beating across the final 3 ⅔ frames.

Odorizzi allowed a baserunner in every inning he began. He operated with no feel for his secondary pitches and, as a result, relied too heavily on his four-seam fastball. Seattle swung and missed once against the 26 secondary offerings Odorizzi threw. He could not command his fastball with any consistency, bringing him near catastrophe from the start.
