BERKELEY – Berkeley police on Wednesday were searching for a person who allegedly opened fire on an off-duty officer, according to authorities and media reports.
The shooting was reported in the 2100 block of Oregon Street, between Shattuck Avenue and Fulton Street. That section of the street remained closed as of 3:15 p.m. Just after 3 p.m., a person notified police that they were following a silver sedan that possibly had been involved in a crime Tuesday, according to Berkeley Police Department Officer Byron White. The person in the silver sedan then started shooting at the person who was following them, but no one was injured, White said.
Law enforcement sources with knowledge of the shooting told the Bay Area News Group that the victim was an off-duty Berkeley police officer. The officer was driving to work when he came across the sedan, the sources said.that the victim was an off-duty officer and that the suspect was driving a BMW linked to a vehicle burglary earlier this week.Police found 22 shell casings at the scene of the shooting, The Berkeley Scanner reported.Check back for updates.
