The Oakland Education Association has created a massive rift after putting out what many see as an inflammatory anti-Israel statement that made many Jewish community members feel upset and scared for their children's physical, emotional and educational well-being.
There are signs that readand "Fuck Israel" on buildings and sidewalks in Oakland and San Francisco, posters of Israeli hostages being torn down in Oakland's Montclair neighborhood and a teacher in Oakland who hung a poster reading "from the river to the sea," a reference to destroying the state of Israel.
The union then erroneously put the full blame of the current conflict on Israel, without noting any nuances or complicated history that Israelis and Palestinians both share. Holderfield said that the union should take down its "dangerous message" as well as the one-sided antisemitic curriculum the union is urging educators to teach,She said that if the union replaced any other ethnic group for Israeli or Palestinian, the message would be considered racist. It's not as if parents don't want their children to learn about the conflict; it's that they want the curriculum to be fair and balanced.
But their thoughts were expressed in their post, where they stressed that as teachers they have academic freedom to educate as they see fit. Many in the Jewish community who are upset about the rise in antisemitism following the Hamas attacks and corresponding Israeli airstrikes that have killed Palestinians are also well aware that there is a rise in Islamophobia – and they denounce hatred on both sides.
It calls for the establishment of a state of Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, erasing the state of Israel and its people. It is also often a rallying cry for terrorist groups and their sympathizers.
