As the crowd dispersed, some cars contained by law enforcement.

OAKLAND — An illegal sideshow involving dozens of cars and spectators temporarily shut down Oak Street on Friday night near the Oakland Museum of California.

In response to multiple calls, Oakland police arrived at the 1000 block of Oak Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. As the crowd began to disperse, officers contained several of the vehicles for enforcement purposes, police said. Sideshows typically involve dangerous vehicle stunts, peeling out and driving in “donuts,” leaving skid marks in circles as cars overrev their engines. Spectators watch the drivers hurtle around — sometimes scattering if a car careens into the crowd.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about illegal sideshows is encouraged to send a tip to the Oakland Police Department at this non-emergency email address: [email protected].
