OAKLAND — Outside West Oakland’s Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Mayor Libby Schaaf and Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong joined faith community representatives Tuesday to renew the city’s commitment to addressing gun violence through its Ceasefire program, pledging additional staffing and outreach backed by persistent enforcement efforts.

“That relentless communication and outreach is followed by an offer of services, of life coaches. It is only if that message is not heeded, and those services are not accepted, that we bring enforcement as a last resort.” Armstrong followed Schaaf, asserting that Ceasefire’s focus on groups and gangs as violence vectors remained necessary and that police took no pleasure in enforcement efforts.

“We see nearly 90% of those invited attend [call-in] meetings, and that’s critical to have those that need to hear the message in the room to tell them to put the guns down,” he said in part, adding that two operations last month led to several arrests, recoveries of multiple loaded firearms, including some with high-capacity magazines and at least one “ghost gun.”
