Mark Kotsay said he talked to former Oakland Athletics utilityman Chad Pinder earlier this week.
OAKLAND – Manager Mark Kotsay received an unexpected phone call earlier this week when the Oakland A’s were in Seattle. It was from former Athletics utilityman Chad Pinder, who called Kotsay to say he was about to retire.
“I think relationship goes further than just manager-player and coach-player,” Kotsay said Sunday before the A’s played the Houston Astros to finish a three-game series. “He reached out to me while we were in Seattle to talk about his decision and I felt really good about that. This coaching role, this managing role is about relationships and the strength of those, and I think Chad and I value each other and respect each other.
Pinder, 31, played 553 games for the A’s over seven seasons from 2016 to 2022. He battled numerous injuries but hit .242 with 197 RBI and a .711 OPS.
