New York City rocker Jon Spencer used to be a regular visitor to Canada, whether playing with his old bands Pussy Galore, Heavy Trash or the Blues Explosion, but it’s been at least a decade since the garage-blues luminary last visited Ottawa.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
In the interview, edited for length, he talks about the second HITmakers album, Spencer Gets It Lit, as well as the impact of the pandemic, the challenges of touring and his memories of a favourite Canadian collaborator — the late Dallas Good, the beloved Sadies bandleader who died suddenly of a heart condition last year at the age of 48.Article contentQ: Let’s start by getting caught up on the end of Blues Explosion and the start of the HITmakers.
A: The last album from Blues explosion was in 2015, and we wrapped things up around that time as well. We couldn’t work anymore due to some health issues of one band member. So that was done. HITmakers has been going since 2018. The first record, Spencer Sings The Hits, is credited to just my name but it features the core of the band.A: After Blues Explosion ended, I was kinda moping about for a year or two.
A: It really sucked. I think I was in denial about the whole thing. I wasn’t going completely stir crazy but now, with some time and retrospect, I was mighty scared. And in some ways, the second half of 2021 and the first half of 2022 were more frustrating because it was like things were easing up but I still wasn’t allowed to be working. And things are still not back to normal.Article contentA: Touring these days is much harder than it used to be and very tricky.
