New York City has canceled all in-person Pride events amid the coronavirus pandemic

As the threat of coronavirus continues to bring the world to a standstill, many major events around the globe have already been canceled to prevent the further spread of the disease. Now, one of the largest LGBTQ festivals in the world has decided to shut down for the year. On Monday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that all permits for large events in the month of June had officially been canceled by the city, meaning the“New York City is the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement. We’ve come a long way since the first Christopher Street Liberation Day March 50 years ago, which is a testament to the bravery and resiliency of LGBTIA+ New Yorkers in the struggle for equality,” de Blasio said in a statement released with the news.
