The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) plans to legally prevent Seriti Resources from laying off over 1,000 workers. Unions argue the retrenchments will push their members further into poverty, while Seriti claims its operations are unsustainable and require restructuring.

The National Union of Mineworkers says it will soon interdict Seriti Resources from proceeding with its planned retrenchment of more than one thousand workers.

The coal miner’s plan has infuriated unions which say it will force their members deeper into poverty. It can’t only be Seriti that is having these challenges.
