NUM eagerly awaiting positive Gupta mine ruling
The union said it wants to see Optimum employees going back to work so that they can be able to support and provide for their families. The National Union of Mineworkers is hoping for a positive ruling which could see workers returning to work at the mine previously owned by the infamous Gupta family.
NUM Highveld regional chairperson Malekutu Motubatse said: “NUM is unequivocal that the termination was informed by rapaciousness. The shareholders of RBCT [Richards Bay Coal Terminal], which are Thungela, Seriti, Exxaro and Glencore, decided to maximise profit, while the marginalised and downtrodden workers at Optimum [Coal Mine] continue to suffer and are subjected to abject poverty by these conglomerates.”Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
