Some 3 700 drowning incidents were reported between 2016 and 2021 - with KZN accounting for more than half these.
"Our focus is on teaching people throughout South Africa to be safe in and around water especially those who are most vulnerable being children under the age of 14," says the NSRI's Kuhle Mkhize."So the need for water safety education is obvious if you consider the drowning statistics in our country and the rural under-served communities in particular are vulnerable to drownings in farm dams, rivers and streams and without skills people too often find themselves in trouble.
