Emergency nursing was once a respected and attractive career but it's now 'a revolving door of junior, inexperienced staff,' NSGEU president Sandra Mullen told Nova Scotia Health in a Jan. 9 letter. - Saltwire / FileFinacial incentives and better employee support is needed to stop the hemorrhaging of emergency department staff to the private sector, the Nova Scotia General and Government Employees Union says.

“I fear for my license. We are understaffed almost every shift. I looked back at staffing levels over the past year. I believe we consider 16 staff to be ‘fully staffed.’ I counted 32 shifts where we were fully staffed. 32 shifts in a YEAR." The letter was copied to other officials including Premier Tim Houston, Health Minister Michelle Thompson and Liberal Leader Zach Churchill.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has promised that every nursing graduate in the province will be offered jobs here.were hired by Nova Scotia Health and the IWK Health Centre.
