ICYMI - NP View: The West must stand up for Taiwan
China ratcheted up its sabre-rattling in the Taiwan Strait following U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week, conducting war games, firing missiles, buzzing the island with fighter jets and making threatening statements on an almost daily basis. Canada and our allies must support Taiwan diplomatically, militarily and economically against these unacceptable and dangerous provocations.
But China bided its time, and on June 30, 2020, when the world was preoccupied with COVID, it imposed a new “national security law,”Though the move was in clear violation of the 1984 The lack of any meaningful response for subsuming Hong Kong and flagrantly violating international treaty obligations must certainly have played into Chinese President Xi Jinping’s view that his country has grown so powerful — economically and militarily — that it is now virtually untouchable. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that Xi is now laying the groundwork for an invasion of Taiwan, especially while western countries are diverting resources and attention toward the war in Ukraine.
Though Beijing clearly believes its “one China” policy is indisputable, this is not the view held by Taipei. While Taiwan has historically been part of China — having been formally annexed by the Qing dynasty in 1684, it was ceded to Japan in 1895 and it has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China .
