Byrne, the former Browns public relations director, has received an Award of Excellence from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Heaton was the legendary Browns writer for The Plain Dealer. Byrne was the new public relations director for the Browns, hired in 1981.It was a fun night, Chuck and Cece Heaton acting as if they knew Sally and Kevin Byrne their entire lives.said Byrne. “I never thought I’d be in position to be a friend of his. When I was a kid, I delivered The Plain Dealer.”. It’s a new category created for assistant coaches, trainers, equipment managers, video/TV directors and public relations directors.

During his college days at Marquette, he called Lebovitz. The Plain Dealer sports editor answered the phone. Byrne gave a quick account of his background writing for the Marquette University paper and other media things he did.“I was in awe of guys like Hal and Chuck,” said Byrne. “I never got hired at The Plain Dealer, but I got a chance to work with them for years. I used to talk to Hal every week as we talked about items for his notes column.

“Before I even could accept the job, the station called and said they were dumping almost all the local programming,” said Byrne. “I ended up taking a job in college sports information at Missouri-St. Louis.” Byrne still talks about the two agonizing playoff losses to Denver as if they happened last week instead of January of 1987 and again in 1988.
