Premier Tim Houston speaks to reporters at Province House in Halifax on Oct. 25 in this file photo. - Francis CampbellHALIFAX, N.S. — Premier Tim Houston was a bit terse as he answered media questions following cabinet meetings on Thursday, blaming the fact that Nova Scotians will have to pay a carbon tax on gas in the spring on the federal government.
“No, this is not a money-maker for Nova Scotians,” Houston said. “This will be very, very expensive for Nova Scotia families.” The premier said his government has a “productive relationship” with the federal Liberal government on a lot of files, but on this one they are at odds. “Premier Houston and his government brought in legislation that triggered the carbon tax by scrapping the cap-and-trade system that we had in Nova Scotia,” Churchill said Thursday. “And he seems more interested in blaming the federal government than doing his job and negotiating a better deal for the people of Nova Scotia.”
“Had Houston and his government actually done the work required here, like we did, they could have come up with an alternative that was preferable,” Churchill said. “But the fact is, they didn't do their job and now they're playing the blame game, as usual.”“I think it's a pretty clear cut situation, regardless of how any of us feels about it, the federal government has been very clear that all provinces are required to price carbon,” Chender. “And that price went up.
