Nova Scotia pediatricians give masking, other COVID-19 advice for school year | SaltWire Today

“Anyone who feels more comfortable wearing a mask should still wear a mask,” Comeau said. “I think the biggest thing we want to reinforce is that masks are a tool that we can use to reduce transmission both if the wearer has COVID but also if the wearer is trying to protect themselves from getting COVID.”

“I think the same can be extrapolated in schools,” she said. “If there’s a school assembly taking place and you’re with a whole bunch more students that you’re not normally with, then that might be an opportunity to put on a mask.” Besides masking, vaccination is the other major tool parents can use to protect their children against COVID-19.

Only about 60 per cent of school-aged children in Nova Scotia have had two doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Asked if she was surprised so many parents aren’t bothering when it comes to vaccinating their children, Comeau speculated it might be because children generally have mild infection compared to adults, especially the elderly.
