Between now and early October when voting gets underway, The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board is planning to publish dozens of candidate Q&As and nearly two dozen commentaries connected to a handful of San Diego city ballot measures and seven state propositions on the Nov. 8 election. Keep checking back as we fill in this voter guide.

A: First of all, with better water storage and management of our scarce supplies, we’d be talking a lot less about water restrictions. A: The Democrats’ gun policies put ever more burdens on the law-abiding while ignoring the need to hold criminals accountable. We need to fully enforce the state’s Armed Prohibited Persons Program and get tough on criminals with illegal guns.

Q: California has nearly 700 prisoners on death row, and the state hasn’t executed anyone since 2006. How will your administration approach the death penalty over the next four years? Q: Six years after the passage of Proposition 64 to legalize recreational marijuana, concerns about the health of the cannabis industry — and public health — are growing. What would you do differently to oversee the industry in the next four years? What, if anything, should change?

The permitting system, in typical California fashion, has very high taxes and is impossibly bureaucratic, and there’s been some interest in cutting taxes and streamlining rules. I only wish Democrats in Sacramento had similar sympathy for every other small business.
