Nov. 2022 Election: Q&A with Alejandro Galicia, candidate for California state Senate District 18 [Opinion]

There are two candidates on the Nov. 8 ballot running for a four-year term to represent a newly drawn district that runs from southern San Diego County into Imperial, San Bernardino and Riverside counties: Republican CEO/veterans’ advocate Alejandro Galicia and Democratic Chula Vista City Council member/California Coastal Commissioner Steve Padilla. Here are Galicia’s answers to a 14-question survey The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board emailed candidates.

A: I support empowering both large and small businesses to reduce their carbon footprints to help reduce greenhouse gases, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution to this. As such, I don’t support doing it via mandates but rather via positive incentives to encourage actual consistent long-term change in a manner that business owners can work into their business models.

Q: The California Air Resources Board has adopted a policy that would ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles in the state by 2035. What would you do to ease the transition to electric vehicles and ensure affordability, equity and practicality? Q: Housing affordability is a huge issue in California. What can you do to help renters or homeowners who are struggling now?

A: I don’t see progress. Our homeless problem is not simple. It is not only a result of bad long-term housing policies. It is also a result of other cities relocating their homeless people to. As such, we are not only having to manage with local people struggling to find housing, but we are also the destination of states that, instead of dealing with their own housing issues, coerce some of the affected people to travel to California.

A: I would seek to provide them with enhanced resources for public schools aimed at and earmarked for specifically bringing students current to their current educational levels when they are not keeping up with their school progress. A: I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. While I also strongly support common-sense firearms safety, I have a lot of concerns with the campaign of the current attorney general to make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to have access to firearms as well as ammunition.
