The library has been closed due to maintenance work for the past three months
Windows and equipment at a library in a Nottinghamshire town have been damaged by vandals. Newark Library, which has been closed due to maintenance work since January, was targeted over the weekend beginning Saturday, April 27.
Nottinghamshire County Council said damage had been caused to five high level roof windows as well as equipment and resources in the library. The authority said Nottinghamshire Police are investigating the matter. "This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated at our libraries," it said in a statement. "Thankfully nobody was working in the library at the time of the incident and we would like to reassure residents and library users that we are working hard to repair damaged areas."At the moment, temporary measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and security of our premises until the permanent repairs are completed.
The council said the damage was not likely to delay its reopening date of June 3. "We’re really grateful for your patience whilst we repair the damage," it added.
