A notorious gang leader with links to multiple murders and violent crimes was killed in a shootout with police in Verulam , KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The 22-year-old, known as the leader of the Inanda West Gang, and his 27-year-old accomplice were fatally shot during the encounter at Cottonlands on Thursday afternoon. Police had been tracking the gang leader and two accomplices, who were allegedly traveling to Umhlanga to collect drugs and ammunition, using intelligence gathered.
When the three left Umhlanga, they switched vehicles, but vigilant police identified them and pursued them until the suspects parked their car along Vincent Dickinson Road in Cottonlands. The gang leader had an active warrant of arrest for murder and was linked to over 20 cases, accused of killing more than 10 people. Authorities discovered a firearm in the gang leader's possession during the initial search of the vehicle. KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi commended the officers for their persistent pursuit of the main suspect, who had terrorized Inanda, KwaMashu, and surrounding areas. While Mkhwanazi expressed the ideal scenario would have been a live arrest for the suspect to face justice and provide closure for victims and their families, he acknowledged the tragic circumstances. He stated, 'He unfortunately attempted to kill police officers, and such an act invited the police to defend themselves, and in doing so, he decided his own fate.
