'Her favourite moment, I suspect, might have been the lament ‘Sleep, Dearie, Sleep’ by her piper, Paul Burns,' writes Tim Ewart.
On the Queen’s 90th birthday I got a call from Graham Smith, who runs the campaign group Republic. He asked if there was any chance of some critical reporting on the monarchy. I had to tell him sorry, on this particular day, no chance at all. Last week a BBC correspondent in Canada was asked: “How beloved was she?” It brought to mind a night in Quebec City during a tour by the former Prince of Wales. I was spattered with eggs thrown by angry protestors. Make of that what you will.
In the end, solemnity prevailed. Our American audience watched the Queen’s funeral without interruption from voice overs. In a world of constant chatter, that silence was golden. She would have smiled at the sight of Prince George, nine years old, rifling through the order of service to see how much more there was to go. And her favourite moment, I suspect, might have been the lament “Sleep, Dearie, Sleep” by her Queen’s Piper, Paul Burns. It was his job to play beneath her bedroom window each morning.
