If anyone is going to redesign something as fundamentally utilitarian as a pickup truck, it might as well be Elon Musk

is currently ruling the roost with 958 foot-pounds from its 6.7-liter turbo-diesel; we'd be shocked if the eventual Tesla Truck made less than 1,000 foot-pounds plus a bunch more horsepower than the Ford. Also, Musk says"they'll be versions... that will be more expensive," which invariably means more battery, dual-motor/4X4 and power-up options like every other Tesla on the roster.

Additionally, an electric truck could also power a wider range of tools at a remote or as-yet unpowered job site. Inverters and more robust 12-volt powerlets have been showing up in trucks for a while now, but you either have to run the engine for full power or risk running out your battery . A 200kWh battery pack solves those problems. In a pinch, with the right setup, an electric truck could also , or just that occasional winter storm power outage.

And that's to say nothing of the design and cargo capabilities that come from not having to deal with a transmission, driveshaft or the thousands of other parts fossil-fueled trucks require. Maintenance should be greatly reduced - all big departures for truck owners. Musk has always been long on talk and even longer on actual delivery times, but in the end, he ultimately does deliver. And so far, while there are certainly some nits to pick, the cars have been world-class hammers pounding away at the conventions of automaking. We'll have to wait and see if his truck really has the power to move hard-to-please pickup truck drivers away from gas pumps and towards Superchargers.
