The Met Office has predicted that clear skies tonight could offer ideal viewing conditions for the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Sightings are possible across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.
The Met Office has stated it may be possible to see the aurora tonight, as clear skies will make for ideal viewing conditions . The Aurora Borealis , otherwise known as the northern lights , appear as large areas of colour in the direction due north.
These includes include pale green, pink, shades of red, yellow, blue and violet which create a fascinating display in the night sky. It occurs as a result of solar activity and collisions of charged particles in the solar wind which collide with molecules in the Earth's upper atmosphere. The best way to see the aurora is when the sky is clear of any clouds.
Due to its northern position, parts of northern Scotland have the best chance of seeing the phenomenon tonight, but northern England may see the spectacle too. Lancashire residents are advised to check the skies from this evening, with the peak of visibility possibly being the early hours of Friday.Subscribe to our daily newsletter LANCS LIVE NEWS and get all the biggest stories from across Lancashire direct to your inbox
