It’s the job of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to inspect and maintain 476 miles of regional rivers and streams in Greater Cleveland, and to remove debris if necessary to ensure that they remain free flowing.

Doan Brook orginates at the eastern edge of Shaker Heights and descends through a gorge that carries it down and then under University Circle, before re-emerging near the Cleveland Museum of Art and flowing on to Lake Erie. They added radios and emergency breathing kits to their harnesses. Others grabbed video cameras to document the culvert’s structure. Then the team donned helmets and checked flashlights. It was dark in there without them. A rescue crew also was on site in case of an emergency.
