MEC for Economic Development Bitsa Lenkopane intervenes to prevent job losses at Food Lover’s Market and Buffalo Park Lodge in Mahikeng. Agreement ensures full wages and employment opportunities for affected workers.
Food Lover’s Market has pledged to ensure full compensation for all employees affected by the impending closure of its Mmabatho store in the North-West province of South Africa. This commitment follows intervention by North West MEC for Economic Development Bitsa Lenkopane, who sought to mitigate potential job losses arising from the closure of both Food Lover’s Market and the Buffalo Park Lodge in Mahikeng.
The Food Lover’s Market supermarket, located within the Mega City shopping complex in Mmabatho, is scheduled to shut down at the end of this week, while the Buffalo Park Lodge will close its doors at the end of March. Under a negotiated agreement facilitated by MEC Lenkopane, Food Lover’s Market has guaranteed that all employees will receive their full salaries. Furthermore, these employees will be offered positions at Boxer Superstore, the retail chain slated to take over the vacated space at the Mega City shopping complex. Matebesi, spokesperson for the MEC, highlighted that MEC Lenkopane had also met with the management of Buffalo Park Lodge. The objective of this meeting was to explore strategies for keeping the lodge operational and safeguarding approximately 19 permanent jobs that were at risk. The MEC expressed confidence that the lodge’s management would provide these employees, who are primary breadwinners for their families, with the opportunity to contribute to the institution’s success and navigate any challenges that might threaten its operations.Matebesi underscored the broader implications of business closures, emphasizing that they not only jeopardize job security but also negatively impact the province’s economic standing and government revenue collection. MEC Lenkopane has pledged that her department will exhaust all available resources to prevent job losses in the province. In another development, the acting head of the Department of Economic Development, Relebohile Mofokane, addressed the staff of the Golden Leopard Resort (GLR) amidst financial difficulties faced by the entity. Matebesi stated that the department had managed to “turn the tide” after employees had endured “swimming in a deep dark sea of mismanagement and debts for the past three years.” He explained that employees had gone months without receiving their salaries and third-party deductions, including taxes and provident funds, leading to hardships and, in some cases, the inability to receive retirement payouts. Matebesi revealed that the department had successfully settled all outstanding third-party deductions over the past six months and made provisions for salary payments. The MEC expressed optimism that the entity would operate smoothly at the start of the new financial year
