Group leader Tracy Carragher said: “While we welcome [the council leader’s] change of heart, forcing through these decisions at policy and strategy where only the most loyal Labour and Tory councillors sit, rather than at full council where a decision of this scale should be taken, shows that he has no regard for the democratic will of the council or the people it is elected to represent.

Progressive Change say they have secured 11 of the 19 councillor signatures required for an emergency meeting to go ahead later this month and are “calling on councillors from all parties and none with a moral conscience” to support them. Both Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and first minister Humza Yousaf waded into the debate as they campaigned in the final days of the major battleground Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election in neighbouring South Lanarkshire.
