Court documents allege that the North Hills resident stole mail and identifying documents from potentially dozens of victims.
A San Fernando Valley man is facing federal charges alleging that he made off with $2.6 million after stealing the identities of several Beverly Hills residents, mostly by stealing mail from their homes, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.
The indictment alleges that from November 2021 to October 2023, Sela stole mail from Beverly Hills residents to get personal and financial information including debit cards, bank account numbers, credit cards, and telephone numbers. Authorities allege Sela went as far as “SIM swapping” — a practice that allows phone numbers associated with sensitive accounts to be changed — to work around two-factor authentication.
After his arrest, the Beverly Hills Police Department conducted a search warrant at Sela’s West Hollywood apartment and found stolen mail, bank statements and driver’s licenses related to at least 18 different people, seven debit and credit cards belonging to victims, and some checks and receipts for expensive purchases including a watch costing nearly $17,000 that was bought using stolen information.
